THE COST OF A PISS

I was in the main car park in Ambleside the other day and needed to go for a piss, it used to be 20p now it has gone up to 50p, which is ten shillings in old money, not that many of you will remember that.
In those days there were public loos everywhere, they hadn’t been sold on Ebay. Men could go and have a piss free as often as they liked, women were not quite as lucky they had to go and “spend a penny” to go in a cubicle. These were old pennies 240 to the pound and even so there was always one or more free cubicles for those who couldn’t even afford a penny. It stands to reason that homeless people of which there were very few then will have to go and piss and shit in an alleyway.
This is a basic human need, why on earth do we need to charge for it? We are supposed to be one of the richest countries in the world, it is pathetic that we have to charge for every little thing. While I am on the subject one used to be able to park free almost anywhere.
Looking back 50p (ten shillings) would buy a lot of things then. One could go out buy a GALLON of petrol, a packet of fags and a couple of pints in the pub, all for the same cost as a piss now. Perhaps it is a sign of old age to look back at the good old days, but a lot of things were better then.
I know we didn’t earn as much then but people on average incomes could afford to buy a house and there were Council Houses for those who were happy to rent, now sold off like the public loos and the money squandered. A Mini cost about £500 and for those lucky enough an E Type Jag was about two grand.
I haven’t posted for a while but I am still around. I have been very ill, in hospital on intravenous antibiotics for a week, thank God we still have the NHS. I have been very depressed and very busy finishing my surplus house, which I hope to sell soon. Getting over it all now. John is back but no longer trying to save the world.
